Sahrawi Population in Occupied Laayoune receives the UN Fact-Finding Mission with peaceful demonstrations and national flags

In an amateur video from May 17 one can see how civilians armed by truncheons collaborate with the police to pursue Saharawi people, those same people wearing traditional Saharawi clothes also work closely with the police, and the highly significant amount of security services in the streets. [Video to download]

As expected, Sahawi citizens in occupied Laayoune took the chance of the presence of the UN Fact-Finding Mission in town to communicate clear and loud their legitimate claims represented in the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.

Yesterday, the Moroccan occupation authorities started distributing a considerable amount of national Sahrawi clothes "Draa and Malhfa" to masses of Moroccan settlers and Royal Army members, along with Moroccan flags and their King's pictures. This maneuver is a way to prevent the manifestation of Sahrawi demonstrators, and repressing any peaceful demonstration or sit-in they might organize. The objective of all that is to mislead the international public opinion and falsify the truth about the current situation in Western Sahara.

Sahrawi students started wide protest movements on the 17th of May in the following educational institutions:

Al Khansaa Preparatory School, The so called Al Hassan 1st High School and Lisan Eddine bin Al Khatib High School where the students brandished national flags, and chanted anti-occupation slogans rejecting the Moroccan presence in Western Sahara.

Moroccan oppression forces intervened to prevent the student from pursuing their peaceful demonstrations, and scattered them harshly. They then arrested three Sahrawi students (3) among whom Nawal Assamane and Al Kharashi Bousoula.

While some of the Sahrawi Human Rights Activists were in a meeting with the UN Fact-Finding Mission, Sahrawi populations started huge peaceful demonstrations in "Hamdi Lembarki" street (ex Smara street) and the adjacent streets, raising national flags and chanting national slogans rejecting the Moroccan occupation and claiming Western Sahara freedom and independence. They also affirmed that the sole and legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people is the POLISARIO.

Uraban police forces backed up with auxiliary forces and secret services members wearing civil clothes intervened brutally against the demonstrators beating them mercilessly, but failed to make them call off the protest. Then, massive forces of the Moroccan Royal Army were summoned to help repress the demonstrators in the above mentioned street and "Maatallh District" and "AlQods District". Several Sahrawi houses were besieged among which the houses of some former Sahrawi political prisoners.

Sahrawi populations in "Maatallah" district rushed to the rescue and support of their compatriots in the form of a huge peaceful demonstrations raising national flags and chanting anti-occupation slogans as a sign of solidarity and union.

The Sahrawi Human Rights Activists strongly expressed their indignation towards the negative neutrality the UN mission is showing vis-à-vis the ongoing events in Laayoune. The mission didn't leave Parador hotel despite the insistence of the activists. As a pretext, the mission claims the non-jurisdiction on whatever event taking place in the streets.

The Sahrawi activists communicated their written protest to the UN mission that fixed another meeting with them the following day.
